Thanksgiving in Memphis: Gratitude, Home, and a Classic Southern Recipe to Share

by Keino Spring

Thanksgiving has a special way of reminding us what matters most — family, faith, community, and the place we call home. As I work with buyers and sellers across Memphis, Shelby County, DeSoto County, and Marshall County, I get a front-row seat to how meaningful “home” truly is. This season brings all of that into clear focus.

Whether you're celebrating your very first Thanksgiving in a new home or gathering in a place filled with years of memories, this time of year encourages reflection and resets your heart for the year ahead. And for many families across the Mid-South, the holidays are when conversations about future plans — buying, selling, investing, or upgrading — naturally begin.

Why Thanksgiving Matters for Homeowners (and Future Homeowners)

Thanksgiving brings people together and gives us space to talk about life goals, including:

  • Whether a new home is on the horizon

  • If it’s time to upsize, downsize, or invest

  • How to build generational wealth through real estate

  • What “home” means for the next chapter

And yes — the holiday season is still a great time to buy or sell for many families in the Memphis area. (If you ever want to talk strategy, I’m here.)

For now… let’s talk food.

Recipe Spotlight: Classic Southern Cornbread Dressing

One of the most searched Thanksgiving dishes in the South — and for good reason.

This isn’t stuffing. This is Southern cornbread dressing, the kind that belongs on every Memphis Thanksgiving table.

Ingredients

  • 1 pan of baked cornbread, cooled and crumbled

  • 4 cups chicken broth

  • 1 cup chopped onion

  • 1 cup chopped celery

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten

  • 1 tsp poultry seasoning

  • 1 tsp sage (optional but highly recommended)

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.

  2. Sauté the onions and celery in butter until soft.

  3. In a large bowl, combine the crumbled cornbread, veggies, broth, seasonings, salt, and pepper.

  4. Stir in the eggs until everything is fully mixed.

  5. Pour into a greased baking dish.

  6. Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until the top is golden and the edges are firm.

Serve warm and watch it disappear fast.

Thanksgiving Q&A

Is Thanksgiving a good time to buy a home in Memphis?

Yes, many buyers face less competition, and sellers who list during the holidays are typically motivated. It can be a smart window for negotiation.

Should I list my house during the holidays?

If your home shows well and you price it right, holiday buyers are serious. Many families want to move by early 2026.

What are the best Thanksgiving traditions for new homeowners?

Setting up a gratitude wall, hosting your first dinner, or creating a “first home” holiday photo can become meaningful traditions.
